The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) today commended the Los Angeles Times editorial urging state lawmakers to protect consumers by establishing a licensed and regulated online poker system in California. Several of the editorial’s main points echo the recent testimony of Steven Miller, PPA’s California state director.

&

ldquo; The LA Times editorial board hits the nail on the head in explaining why regulated online poker is the best way to protect California consumers,” said Miller. “Like it or not Californians are playing poker online, but currently they are operating in an unregulated space that leaves them vulnerable to illegal and foreign gambling sites. Under a regulated online poker system, technologies exist to protect consumers from fraud and detect and prevent underage and problem gambling, while raising money for the state without raising taxes.”

Lawmakers should empower state regulators to examine and vet potential operators and make independent determinations on their suitability.

As Steven Miller recently stated in his testimony, “the Legislature should not be picking winners and losers. State regulators are in the strongest position to make the determination of operator suitability. Lawmakers should legislate, regulators should regulate and the players just want to play.”
