(Macau).- Secretary for the Economy and Finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen has denied that from July the Macau authorities will curb the use of cards issued by state-run electronic payment system China UnionPay Co to obtain cash.

But he has said the government may take action, if needed, to close loopholes in the mainland’s currency controls. Mr Tam said so after the Reuters news agency reported that the government is urging Macau banks to restrict the use of the UnionPay cards in shops in casinos.

In the meanwhile, the police said on Friday they had arrested two mainlanders for illegally letting gamblers use UnionPay cards to obtain US$17.53 million in cash since last May.
