According to GamblingData’s Winter 2012/13 IPT survey

More in-play betting activity than ever before is taking place

(UK).- The In-Play Tracker from GamblingData is now over a year old, and the latest Winter 2013 survey provides a year-on-year comparison for the leading operators that gives first-time statistical evidence of the rise of in-play betting opportunities. Total events captured by the survey rose almost 23 % over 2012 as operators continued to ramp-up their in-play coverage.

eading the charge was William Hill, which improved its events total year-on-year by over 50 percent, followed by Bwin which had 36 percent more events this year than was captured last year. They were followed by Ladbrokes (32 percent), Unibet (26 percent) and Paddy Power (20 percent).

Bet365 retains dominance
bet365 remains the dominant in-play operator. Throughout the five IPT surveys undertaken by GamblingData – which look to capture how many events each operator is offering to its customers during 10-minute betting windows chosen over the 14 days of the survey – the Stoke-based operator has remained top dog in terms of total events.

The Winter 2013 IPT report, now encompassing the offerings of 11 of the top operators, shows that bet365 came top of the list with 636 events captured during the 10-minute betting windows, ahead of William Hill with 457, Bwin with 431 and Ladbrokes at 412.

The survey also captures the total amount of sports offered by the 11 sites, and bet365 again led the way with 21 sports, ahead of Bwin and Ladbrokes with 15 each and Sportingbet and Unibet with 14.

Basketball supplants off-season tennis
The Winter 2013 survey proves how in-play is reliant on the full sports eco-system for its success. Football was again the most heavily-contested area accounting for 67 percent of the total events offered over the period, with the top four that emerged in the previous survey maintaining their collective lead over the rest. bet365 was again top with 310 football events, having been displaced in the previous survey by Ladbrokes which fell to third with 292. William Hill took second spot with 307, while Bwin was fourth with 273.

But with the tennis season in abeyance, basketball rose to become the second most popular sport among the 11 operators with 10 percent of the total events, followed by volleyball at 5 percent.

In terms of markets per event, William Hill again led the sample with an average number of markets per event (within the 10-minute betting windows over the 14-day period) of 52, beating Paddy Power with 27.6. Ladbrokes came third with 26.9, bet365 had 26.8, and Bwin had 26.2.

Asian customer-focused operators SBOBET and 12Bet lagged behind their peers somewhat in terms of this metric, with the pair averaging markets per event of 6 and 4.5 respectively. It should be noted, however, that the markets offered on these two websites are heavily concentrated on Asian Handicap betting.
