(Paraguay).- Representatives sanctioned last week the bill that penalizes the illegal games of chance operations with fines and up to five years of prison. Legislator Oscar Tuma talked about the scope of the new law. “It now passes to the government for its promulgation,” he informed. “This law aims to penalize all the people that are working illegally in everything related to games of chance,” he added.

What does the penalty consist of?
Fines or up to five years of prison, depending on the gravity of the case, because an illegal casino is different from an illegal slot in a small store. The higher the gravity, the higher the penalty, so it is considered that a punishment of up to five years can be imposed.

How much do fines cost?
They are determined according to the damage to Treasury. It is in the discretion of the judge of the respective case. The punishment is equivalent to the number of years in jail.

Which will be the body in charge of applying this law?
The District Attorney's Office. However, since its promulgation, any citizen will be able to file the corresponding complaint before the Public Ministery, which must intervene, not as has happened so far, when one had to file an administrative complaint to Conajzar and it had to intervene.
