(Macau).- The draft on the requirements casinos will have to comply with while establishing smoking areas is almost ready, according to government officials. A smoking ban was implemented in Macau earlier this year, however casinos were exempt until the beginning of next year.

When the grace period ends, casinos will be entitled to set up dedicated smoking areas for up to half of the casino’s floor area.

According to the latest draft, casino staff will have no right to compensation should they fall ill after inhaling second-hand smoke. These matters, according to the Health Bureau director Lei Chin Ion, do not fall under the “occupational hazard” category. He said the Labour Affairs Bureau made the decision.

Under the bill, pregnant women and workers diagnosed with respiratory diseases will be exempt from working in smoking areas.
