It critizises the approval of bill 421

ASAJA does not agree with tax modification in Panama

(Panama).- The Panamanian Games of Chance Association said an emphatic “no” to the regulation that modifies the casino tax. The position of this organization joins the one assumed by the Panamanian Association of Executives of Companies and the Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

A

ntonio Alfaro, President of the Association of Games of Chance Administrators (ASAJA), explained that a note was sent to President Ricardo Martinelli requesting that taxes should be left as they were, but the president didn’t veto the article 11 of bill 421 which modifies the Tax Code and adopts other measures.

With the approval on the third debate of bill 421, it decreased from 19% to 18% the percentage that Type-A machine halls must pay on their gross income to the Gambling Control Committee.

It was also reduced from 12.5 to 12% the payment that complete casinos must do. According to the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama, Federico Humbert, on one side, the government wants to sell the land belonging to the Free Trade Zone of Colón in order to obtain more funds, but reduces the casino tax.

Consulted on the matter, the Ministry of Economy and Finances, Frank De Lima, blamed the representatives for the introduction of the article referring to complete casinos and slots tax.
