Government to control new casino openings in Macau

(Macau).- Union Gaming analysts say the Macau government is expected to continue to strictly control the opening of new casino projects in the future. “We believe that the government will not allow more than two new Cotai resorts to come online in any given year,” analysts Grant Govertsen and Felicity Chiang wrote in an investors note.

The simplest way of spreading out the timing of development will be the rate at which various approvals are given,” they say.

The Union Gaming analysts say that just the process of gazetting the draft land concessions can have the effect of “delaying” projects for more than half a year, like as happened with Wynn Macau.

“Other approvals (e.g. architectural design, utility placement, construction labour) will likely be used to further manipulate the timing of new casino openings.”
