Genting’s NEC casino set to receive green light

(UK). Genting UK’s plans for a us$ 190 million super casino at the NEC are a step closer to reality following the latest meeting of Solihull Council’s planning committee. Borough planning chiefs stopped short of approving outline planning permission, but have said they are ‘mindful of approving’ the project subject to further criteria being met.

he committee discussed the company’s plans to build the 4,645 sqm casino, hotel and leisure complex at a meeting on March 14. The proposals are still subject to reports relating to public transport, traffic management, employment and retail.

Resorts World at the NEC is expected to open by the end of 2013, creating 1,100 new jobs and more than 1,750 construction jobs.

A spokesperson for Genting said: “Genting Casinos now looks forward to the next stage of the planning application process for Resorts World at the NEC and then to begin the process, with the support of the NEC Group, to deliver this exciting leisure and entertainment complex.”

Plans for the site include a 10 screen cinema, a 180-bed hotel and spa, a conference and banqueting centre, designer outlet shops, restaurants and 300 car parking spaces. Genting UK said Resorts World will add around us$ 39.5 million per year to the local economy and pledged to recruit locally.

Peter Brooks, executive deputy chairman of Genting UK, said: “The approved project will bring substantial benefits to Solihull and the wider region in terms of job creation and regeneration and will play a key role in the future prosperity and success of The NEC.”

Paul Thandi, CEO of The NEC Group, added: “Resorts World at The NEC is the next important stage in our journey to delivering ‘Destination NEC.’ “It will broaden and deepen the appeal of a site that already attracts around three million visitors a year.”
