The state could receive around U$S 150 million annually

Economy asks to legalize illegal slots in Puerto Rico

(Puerto Rico).- The legalization of slots could bring the state around us$ 150 million annually, estimated the Secretary of Economy, Juan Carlos Puig. On the contrary, if the cost of the coupons increases, the situation would worsen because there are just 8,500 slots registered from the 13,500 existing.

"

There is a high amount of coupons that are forged. It means that, with the increment of the cost, the counterfeit will increase. If they are not authorized to pay prizes in cash, I think that no measure will be attractive because everyone, the owner of the machine, the operator and the player, want to have winnings,” said Puig within the Commission of the Senate in the Department of Economy.

"We have seen that they have a very profitable business and they are not reporting this income to the Department of Economy in their contribution file on incomes", added the officer.

He said that the legalization of these machines could increase the income of economy with the coupon, due to the contribution on income that the economic activity generates, and due to the contribution on the players’ incomes.

Besides, he asked the Department of Economy to be authorized to continue actively promoting the control, inspection and possible confiscation of these machines. "We will continue processing and investigating all the owners and operators related to this industry, for infringements on the Income Tax Code,” he affirmed in a press release.
