It is more difficult and expensive to refurbish a building like this than to build a hotel from zero”, affirmed Nagi Naoufal, director of operations of Sofitel for Latin America.
Sofitel is the hotel operator that Codere presented in the tender of the hotel, and belongs to the multinational French company Accor, one of the main hotel chains worldwide.
Nowadays, the firm administrates 130 hotels globally, but it has 220 until the ending of 2007 due to a change in the business profile of the company. It now just dedicates to “deluxe” and “legendary” hotels. Hotel Casino Carrasco will be its eighth legendary hotel in Latin America.
Sofitel, considered a top brand from Accor group, has great experience in the refurbishment of emblematic buildings. Among them, there are: Hotel "Cartagena Santa Clara", in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia); "Grand Amsterdam", from the Dutch city, "Old Cataract Aswan", in Egypt and "Nicolas de Ovando", in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Codere-Sofitel project for Hotel Casino Carrasco proposes to refurbish the building and its integration in the neighborhood. It also accepts the proposal to eliminate from the façade the added elements that involve substantial distortion of the original project. This way, it will separate the recently closed casino, whose construction does not respect the spirit of the building.
In the interior, they plan to recover the clarity of the original project, and specially, to separate the hotel from the casino, which will operate in the main floor. They will excavate four meters under the current level to put the casino and the underground parking, which will have capacity for 190 cars.
The car parking will have a valet parking system, both for guests of the hotel as well as for casino players. The gambling venues will be separated from the hotel activity. This way, the hotel will be able to manage its gastronomy services, congresses and cultural activities. The future hotel will have 116 rooms.
Its domes, that are part of the most traditional views of Carrasco and Montevideo, will have two deluxe lofts with a privileged view, the same as most of the windows from the old hotel.
Once the Department Council approves the tender, the file will pass to the National Audit Court. It is estimated that this process will take two months. After the Council brings the license, Codere will have four months to present the final project. And the administration may take 30 days to study it and one more month to grant the construction authorization.
Finally, the development should conclude in 20 months.
