Japanese gaming industry could grow as big as Macau's

(Macau).- The potential for a convention-based gaming market in Japan is huge and if introduced it could grow as big as that in Macau, US casino mogul William Weidner said Monday on the eve of the opening of the casino complex Venetian Macau Resort Hotel in Macau. eidner, President of the Las Vegas Sands Corp, told reporters his company is waiting for the Japanese government's decision on whether to allow casinos in the country.

"If the government of Japan wanted a development like this - a us$ 12 billion Cotai Strip development - we'd do it in a minute in Japan." Macau overtook Las Vegas Strip as the world's largest gaming market in 2006 with revenue of us$ 7.1 billion, against us$ 6.69 billion for Las Vegas.

Japan and Taiwan are reportedly considering separately establishing a gaming industry to lure punters and boost tourism revenues, while Singapore awarded two casino licenses earlier.
