Blackpool MPs in crucial casino talks

(UK).- Blackpool MPs are holding talks with culture secretary Tessa Jowell with the hope of persuading her to overturning the Casino Advisory Panels recommendation for Manchester as the destination for the UK’;s first super-casino.

T

hey are also hoping that she will allow MPs two separate votes, one for the regional casino and one for the 16 smaller casinos, when the recommendation passes through Parliament in March.

Gordon Marsden, the Blackpool South MP, said: "Firstly we want to impress upon the Secretary of State the enormous wave of feeling and depth of support not just in Blackpool, but across the whole of the North West.”

“Secondly we want to point out the failure of the Casino Advisory Panel to obey the criteria she laid down, and thirdly we want to stress that because of that failure there needs to be an independent review of their decision and our suggestion is that the scrutiny committee should do that. We have also made representations not just to the chief whip but to the Prime Minister for it to be a free vote," he concluded.
