Sheldon Adelson, the chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, is taking a leave of absence from his positions to receive medical treatment for cancer, as announced by the company on Thursday.

In March of 2019, Adelson announced he was receiving treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The company stated he recently resumed his cancer treatment and will be taking a leave of absence as of Thursday from his role as chairman and CEO of both Las Vegas Sands and Sands China Ltd.

The companies' boards of directors have named Robert G. Goldstein, currently Las Vegas Sands' President and Chief Operating Officer, as acting Chairman and acting CEO of both organizations while Adelson is on medical leave. The company's statement does not specify how long 87-year-old's leave will last.

Last October, the company was reportedly mulling the sale of its Nevada properties including the Venetian and Palazzo resorts because of the pandemic's financial impact on tourism and gambling, as reported by Bloomberg.

Las Vegas Sands shares were down 0.6% premarket, and have fallen 17% in the last 12 months.
