The online betting firm, which is 62% owned by James Packer, filed an application for a judicial review of the Australian Competition Tribunal’s decision to authorise the merger between Tabcorp and Tatts.

ldquo;CrownBet maintains that the proposed merger is bad for punters and competition,” said a spokesman for CrownBet. “We have taken this step to ensure the detriments arising from the merger are properly considered.”

Tabcorp has already said it will oppose the ACCC's application and that Tabcorp and Tatts remained committed to their proposed merger.

The ACCC claims the tribunal made errors that are fundamental to the case and to future merger assessments. However, the tribunal granted authorisation for the Tatts-Tabcorp merger in June, saying the merger would create substantial public benefits and no material detriment.
